The One Anothers
The One Anothers collection was created to merge fine art painting with a traditional staple in the American home, the patchwork quilt. The importance of quilting in American history began as necessity for warmth and survival but blossomed into an artistic practice over time. Traditionally quilts were pieced by young brides, sewn in groups by quilting bees, and even used as secret communication signs for slaves travelling on the underground railroad. When I graduated college, my grandmother gifted me a handmade quilt. Years later, I would make my first patchwork quilt to represent my new marriage to an Englishman using a pattern titled “Both Sides of the Pond.” In this exhibition, I paired each scripture with an existing patchwork pattern that reflected a similar meaning to the verse, and each painting is hung within an embroidery hoop.
